Wheel building in Taiwan.

Posted on 3rd February 2012 in Uncategorized

This is a great video showing the step by step process of the building of carbon wheels in a Taiwanese factory. The speed and precision is incredible. And there’s some frame brazing thrown in for good measure. If you own a wheel “system” (i.e. Zipp, Shimano, Easton, Mavic) this will give you an idea how they were built, and who built them!

One Country, One Gear.

Posted on 31st January 2012 in Uncategorized

While I’m not usually impressed by the idea of Hip Kids Touring on Fixies(tm) this looks like a cool project. Ryan Stamerro plans to ride his fixed gear bike across the U.S. “alone and unassisted”, all the while documenting his journey on film and through his blog. His aim is to raise awareness for Half United, a clothing company dedicated to giving away meals to needy children with every purchase (though the logistics of how they do this aren’t made clear on their website). Stamerro is also trying raise money for the journey through a Kickstarter Campaign although his $5000 goal seems a bit lofty for a 1 month tour in a first world country. With that five grand he says he’ll “be able to get a custom fitting of my bike for the long haul.” Since I did my first month long bike tour on $100 and a Broken Ten Speed(tm) it seems a little outrageous to donate money so he can get a custom track bike! The expenses of printing photos do add up however and as a donor you will receive copies of some of the images he captures along the way.

The concept of the Roving Fixed Gear Photographer touring across the United States has a historical context that Stamerro may not be aware of. The story of Frank Lenz probably being the most famous. The Pittsburg native, who did much of his domestic touring towards the end of the 19th century on a Penny Farthing(!), carried a large format camera weighing nearly 30lbs on his back! He disappeared in Turkey while attempting to circumnavigate the globe on the new fangled “safety bicycle”, the account of which has been superbly documented in David Herlihy’s book The Lost Cyclist. Perhaps if Lenz had been riding a Cinelli Mash he wouldn’t have had to push his bike up this mountain.

My kind of camping…

Kevin Cyr, a Brooklyn-based designer and artist, opened his new mobility and shelter-themed exhibition, ‘Home In The Weeds’, this last month at 941 Geary in San Francisco. Cyr is the artist who designed and built the fantastic human-powered campers, Camper Kart and Camper Bike, as a way to explore human powered movement and shelter with a vintage aesthetic. His new project is a collection of shelters for a future worst-case scenario and includes a bike-pulled trailer, a tent with wainscoting, a shelter from discarded materials and a fallout foxhole shelter built into the ground.
